Not What I Meant At All It could happen anywhere, but it was worst at devotionals. I would hear a statement to the effect of "You must love only God," "God's love surpasses even the love of women," or "Even if you were to meet the most beautiful woman on earth you must not be seduced in your heart" -- to all of which I would say, "Truly I am bereft of God's love." And then I would reflect upon my innocent daydreams about the young women in attendance, all imaginings suddenly possible, in light of these statements. As quick as a thought I would break down and cry. PerhaNot What I Meant At All

In Praise of a RestaurantIn this great house I have tasted China; China, yes, and something more: I have sampled the souls of honest folk, Savoring their elaborate work, Praising in my heart their skill. And I have wept, joyfully wept, That a barbarian with too-big nose and eye May mingle hearts with the children of Han.In Praise of a Restaurant

Time Best SpentListen: There will be time For you and I To talk in doggerels And in gutted rhyme; Time to spend on cheap talk Of you and me, Of mooted points, Obscure lore, and all the rest -- Yes, there will be time When finally sun goes down.Time Best Spent
But it is you, and all the rest, Merit that question: "And do I dare?" Which succinctly answers itself: "I can't challenge fate." But time there is, you say, To shape my fate And in my image make it -- Time, time, time, Like tolling of bell, To change in a flash These last twenty

As Yet UntitledNight was always hardest on me, But not so much lately; I am at peace in this, The twilight world of my mind, A colossus-wide road Of infinite time Painted in colors known only to God -- I am happy, Content, at least: Happy and healthy and helpful, A handsome youth With years to go before death. And why speak of death? For then I may eternal lie; To wait in blissful thought Till, inshallah, death lay down, And himself even die.As Yet Untitled
